This year, the Volkswagen Group will be introducing the Modular Transverse Matrix – the German acronym is MQB (Modularer Querbaukasten) – for the Volkswagen, Audi, ŠKODA and SEAT brands. The MQB strategy represents a turning point in the design and production of future automobiles with transverse-mounted engines. The Modular Transverse Matrix standardises many vehicle component parameters – across brands and vehicle classes. At the same time, it offers access to new technologies.

A pre-production Golf Blue-e-Motion electric vehicle has won its class in the RAC Future Car Challenge for the second time, using the least energy to cover a 57-mile route from Brighton’s Madeira Drive to Pall Mall in the heart of London. This year’s Challenge attracted a larger entry list than the inaugural event, including hybrids and fuel cell models as well as highly efficient diesel cars such as the Passat BlueMotion. The Golf was named the Most Energy Efficient Regular Car (Prototype) class.

The Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion has added a further environmental award to its trophy cabinet, having been named Green Vehicle of the Year at the 2011 ACFO Fleet Awards. The accolade was presented at a prestigious ceremony in Birmingham on Wednesday night.

Volkswagen has been honoured with two class victories in What Car? magazine’s Used Car of the Year 2011 awards. The 2006 Passat Estate claimed a win in the Estate car category, while the 2009 Golf TDI was crowned with the best Green used car accolade.

Volkswagen is boosting the appeal and value of its Golf line-up, with customers ordering a GT, GTI, GTD or R model from today gaining leather upholstery as standard. On top of this, Volkswagen is adding Bluetooth phone preparation to these cars, meaning customers benefit from over £2,000-worth of extra value.

The Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion has claimed its second What Car? Green Car of the Year accolade. The Golf’s success was announced last night at an awards ceremony at Battersea Power Station in London, which is also currently playing host to this year’s EcoVelocity low-carbon motor show.

On sale from today, the Golf GTI Edition 35 – which made its debut at the GTI enthusiasts’ meeting on the shores of Lake Wörthersee in Austria at the start of June – has a 1,984 cc four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged engine which produces 235 PS (25 more than the standard GTI) at 5,500 rpm and 300 Nm (221 lbs ft) of torque at 2,200 rpm.

Today, Volkswagen – in cooperation with six project partners and the German Ministry of the Environment – is presenting the current status of the “Fleet study in electric mobility” that was initiated in July 2008. The primary goal of the project which runs until June 2012: consistently utilise renewable energy sources for electrically powered vehicles. Within the framework of the fleet study, Volkswagen is implementing a total of 20 of the latest generation Golf Variant twïnDRIVE cars as research vehicles.
